We have a community of six sisters in the Philippines, three
Philippinos (Piar, Elizabeth and Leah), two Australians (Oonah and Pat) and
Anne Brittain from this province of UK / Ireland. One of their main areas of
ministry is with Nature's Garden, Women's Cooperative.
Nature's
Garden Women's Multi-purpose Cooperative is a registered livelihood
project making original handmade papers, cards, bags and other handicraft
items. Based in a poor rural part of the Philippines, it is presently providing
the main source of income for families of the village in which it is based.
On November 29th, 2004, the area
suffered landslides and devastating
flash floods with a large loss of life. The calamity received very little
publicity as it was superceded by the widespread tragedy of the tsunami. We,
thanks to the solidarity of women in Austria and other friends, recovered our
lost equipment and in hope started again. One of our members, Edna, lost her
youngest child to the flood waters and she has since given birth to a little
girl.
BY
choosing to buy from us at the women's cooperative you are not giving charity
but you are using your purchasing power to make a real difference in people's
lives.
GORTA Ireland has supported us us for some years now, but we
still need more sales; the women are producing over 1000 cards a week.
If you would like to buy some of
the beautiful hand made cards from Natures Garden, we would love to hear from
you at on of the contact numbers.
