A Celebration of the 350th anniersary of the re-admission of Jews into the United Kingdom.25,000 people gathered in Trafalgar Square on Sunday, 17th September for a SIMCHA (a party) to celebrate this landmark in Jewish and British history. On an enormous high-tech stage the Jewish Music Institute hosted an exciting and vibrant show of traditional and modern Jewish music. Artists from synagogues, youth groups, choirs, bands and dance groups performed and the crowd danced, clapped, sang and swayed. Jews from all backgrounds and traditions (Sephardi, Ashkenazi, Orthodox, Progressive etc.) were there and the atmosphere was one of friendship and solidarity. It is estimated that 80% were Jewish and 20% were not Jewish. The Jewish community is a valued part of Britain's diversity and an example of how a people can keep its own identity and at the same time enjoy and contribute to the whole of society. Photographs and further information can be found on the website of the Jewish Music Institue |
