The theme of today's readings is hospitality. In the first reading, Abraham and Sarah, who are elderly and childless, welcome three strangers who tell Abraham that Sarah is to have a son, the fruit of the earlier promise made to him. Luke's Gospel centres round the journey which Jesus makes to Jerusalem for his passion and death. He is now in Bethany visiting the home of Martha and Mary. This brief incident contrasts the welcome of the two sisters. Martha is busy doing all the serving, while Mary sits at the Lord's feet, listening to his words. Martha complains and wants Jesus to reprimand her sister, but Jesus says, "It is Mary who has chosen the better part; it is not to be taken from her." Martha's activity was necessary, but Mary's contemplation was also good. How do we welcome the Lord? Are our lives so busy that we haven't the time to sit at the Lord's feet and listen to what he has to say to us? This week let us take the time to welcome him into our lives and let him speak to us especially about our hopes for the future. |
