20th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10 Psalm 39 Hebrews 12:1-4 Luke 12:49-53

Today's readings tell us of the personal cost involved in being faithful to God. The prophet Jeremiah became very unpopular in the court of King Zedekiah when he preached that Jerusalem was soon to be conquered by the Babylonians. He almost met his death when he was thrown into a well to sink into the mud but he still continued with proclamation.

IIn the gospel we have a teaching of Jesus about the effect of his words on his hearers. Some will agree; some disagree. There may even be discord among families. Jesus says here that he is not here to bring peace to the earth but fire. Indeed, he can see that he has to face the ultimate baptism, his death.

As the Letter to the Hebrews tells us we have many witnesses who have gone before us on our journey of faith. Jesus himself did not give up but went on to his crucifixion and then his glory. We may not be tested as far as that but let us ask that we may have the courage to be faithful to our calling and our baptism.
