Human understanding cannot fathom God's wisdom nor can it fully appreciate the call to follow Jesus. The author of the Book of Wisdom attempts to describe the nature of wisdom but no one, he reflects, knows the intentions or will of God because human understanding is so feeble. Only when God gives wisdom can human beings learn and understand God's ways. In the Gospel reading Luke lays down the conditions for discipleship. The commitment Jesus demands of his disciples is total, but, as the two parables demonstrate there is a great temptation to give up rather than see the following of Jesus through to the end. If we really understand the nature of our commitment to following Jesus, our discipleship will be a challenge to the status quo in society and might even mean giving up all our possessions. Let us ask ourselves if we are full-hearted in our response to the call to follow Jesus or do we give up easily when faced with difficulties? Then, with the psalmist, let us pray for God's wisdom so that our relationships and lifestyles may reflect our commitment to God. |
