Baruch 5:1-9; Philippians 1:3-6,8-11; Luke 3:1-6 What will it be like when the Day of the Lord comes? The prophet who writes this poem under the name of Baruch, a companion to Jeremiah, looks forward to that day when God will restore Jerusalem and clothe it in beauty and integrity. God will prepare a straight and level path to bring the people of Israel back from their exile in Babylon. The prophet Isaiah wrote many songs expressing the hope that God would one day restore the fortunes of Israel and Luke uses one of them to describe the ministry of John the Baptist. John prepares a way for the Lord by calling people to repent and be baptised. Paul also recognises the need for renewal when he prays that the Philippians may increase in love and understanding as a preparation for the Day of Jesus Christ. This week let us go into the wilderness with John the Baptist. Try to set aside a few minutes each day when you can be quiet and ask God to help you to prepare a way for the Lord's coming in your life at Christmas when all will see the salvation of God. |
