Nehemiah 8:2-6; 8-10; 1Corinthians12: 12-30; Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21. Today's readings emphasise the importance of the Word of God in our lives. The beautiful reading from the book of Nehemiah describes the reading of the Torah (or Law) to the Israelites as they returned in the 6th century from exile in Babylon to their homeland. Ezra, both Priest and Scribe, read the book of the Torah aloud and interpreted it so that the people could understand it. In response they answered "Amen" and bowed down before God. In the gospel reading Jesus goes into the synagogue at the beginning of his ministry in Galilee and reads the section from the prophet Isaiah which speaks of the coming messianic era of freedom, justice and wholeness. This era, Jesus proclaims, is beginning now. Both readings speak of discovering God's promise of salvation through his Word in scripture. Let's listen to the readings attentively today and to those whose gift is to interpret the scriptures. And let's respond by saying "Amen" in our hearts and by celebrating this sacred day with joy. |
