Acts 2:14.22-23 Psalm 15 1Peter 1:17-21 Luke 24: 13-35 Perhaps we are so used to hearing about the resurrection of Jesus that we take it for granted. It was not like that for the apostles. Peter stood up and preached to the crowd before him the amazing fact that God had raised to life Jesus, who had been put to death. The text reads as if all Jews are to be blamed for his death, but in fact only some of the Jewish leaders at the time were responsible for handing Jesus over to the Roman authorities. Jesus' death and resurrection have brought about an outpouring of the spirit which enabled Peter, who had just a short time ago denied Jesus, to proclaim boldly the good news of his new life. The gospel today shows just how difficult it was for Jesus' disciples to understand immediately what had happened. The disciples on the road to Emmaus were downcast, thinking that all their hopes had been dashed. Jesus then came along and walked by their side. He heard their story and opened up the scriptures to them explaining why the Christ had had to suffer to enter into his glory. They only recognised Jesus later at the breaking of bread. Then filled with joy they returned to Jerusalem with the news that the Lord had risen. Today you are invited to reflect on what the Lord's resurrection means to you in your life. Does Jesus walk alongside you? Do you recognise him in the person beside you, the stranger in your midst? Do you allow Jesus' presence to break open the scriptures for you? Jesus' resurrection gives us hope that we too will be raised to new life after our death. Pray psalm 15 slowly trusting that God will show you the path of life. |
