Isaiah 58:7-10 Psalm 112 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 Matthew 5:13-16 Today's readings centre round the theme of light. We are called to make our light shine. The people of Israel returned to their land from exile during the time of Trito (Third)-Isaiah but were disappointed that, despite their adherence to their religious duties, they still did not enjoy peace and prosperity. In the first reading Isaiah tells the people that as well as being faithful to the cult God also asks for justice. Only when they begin to share their possessions with the poor will God shine on them and their light will be evident. In the letter to the Corinthians, Paul explains how the joy of God revealed in Jesus Christ does not come from human wisdom or worldly ways, but by the Holy Spirit. The Gospel passage continues Matthew's Sermon on the Mount. Here the evangelist teaches the essence of discipleship by comparing it with salt and light, two basic ingredients of life. Salt without taste is useless and has to be thrown out, and a lamp hidden under a stand is ineffectual. Disciples, therefore, must keep their faith honed and let their Christian lives be evident to others, even in situations of persecution, as with Matthew's community. As you read the scripture texts this week, ask yourself if God's light is shining through you. What does salt mean in your life as a disciple? And light? How can your "salt" be more flavoursome and your "lamp" brighter? Do the readings today inspire you to live differently in any way? |
