Isaiah 6: 1-8 Psalm 137 1Corinthians 15:1-11 Luke 5:1-11 Have you ever heard God calling you to discipleship? Perhaps we have expectations as to how that will happen but God calls people into his service in different ways as our readings today illustrate. The prophet Isaiah was at prayer in the temple when he was overcome by the awesome holiness of God. Isaiah said he was unworthy to be in God's presence and was immediately purified, his sins taken away. Then he responded to God's call to deliver a difficult message to the king with the words, "Here I am, send me." Peter, James and John were doing their everyday work by the Sea of Galilee when Jesus called them to a different kind of work with him. Their immediate response is striking. In the bible God's call is always unexpected and those called often feel unworthy or unable to do what is being asked of them. Simon Peter was reluctant to pay out his nets again after a discouraging night's fishing but did as Jesus asked him. When Jesus asks us to respond to his call to follow him, we may feel unworthy and unable to accept, but if we trust in God's help we will be given the strength to "put out into deep water". How is God calling me today? Am I ready to respond, "Here I am, send me? |
