Acts 14:21-27 Psalm 144 Apocalypse 21:1-5 John 13: 31-35 In the first reading we hear how Paul and Barnabas "put fresh heart" into the early Christian communities that had experienced persecution. They also appointed elders in the churches they visited and gave an account of how God, through them, had enabled non-believers to come to God. In the book of Revelation the last of John's visions is described taking visionary images from the prophet Isaiah of a "new heaven and a new earth" and "the holy city, the new Jerusalem". Using words originally written at a time when Jerusalem had actually been destroyed, John now creates a symbol of the union of believers with their Lord at the end of time. He sees this union as a renewal of the whole of creation. The gospel takes us back to the night of the Last Supper. Judas has gone out to betray Jesus, who now speaks of his own destiny not as failure but as glory, fulfilling to the utmost God's way of love. How can we "put fresh heart " into our community? Can we follow Jesus' commandment of love and transform our communities and our families? This week let us reach out to those we find difficult to love and transform one part of God's creation. |
