7th Sunday of Easter
Acts 1:2-14
Psalm 26
1Peter 4:13-16
John 17:1-11

In the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles Luke paints a picture of the eleven disciples returning from the Mount of Olives to Jerusalem just after Jesus was taken up to heaven, a short journey allowed on the Sabbath. They spent their time in prayer in the upper room with some of the women followers and Jesus' family, waiting as we do now, for the gift of the Spirit.

The Gospel reading is again taken from John's farewell discourse. Jesus' work is now complete and so he is to be taken into his Father's glory which he has shared since the beginning of time, and which will ultimately be shared by all his disciples. The second part of the passage is a prayer for the disciples that the Father will keep and sanctify them. They are still in "the world", a term symbolising the unbelief which Jesus' revelation encounters.

We are waiting now for the Spirit of glory, the Spirit of God, of whom Peter speaks in his letter. This week you are invited to pray for an outpouring of the Spirit into your life so that you too can share in Christ's glory. Are there any world or national situations that are in need of an infusion of the Spirit? Let us hold them in our prayer too.
