The Ascension of the Lord

Acts 1:1-11 Psalm 46 Ephesians 1:17-23 Luke 24: 46-53

Luke's account of the story of salvation is in two parts. He ended the earthly life of Jesus, as we shall hear in the Gospel, with the event of the Ascension. Part two is the life of the church, and begins as the gospel ends with risen Lord leaving the earth to his home in heaven. Before he was taken up, Jesus again promised that the Holy Spirit would confer power on the apostles to enable them to witness to Jesus' life by their own lives.

IIn the Gospel Luke picks up on the exodus them when he tells how Jesus took (or led) the disciples out from the city, reminding us of when God led the people of Israel out of slavery in Egypt. Jesus is about to complete is own exodus to his Father. Luke ends his gospel on a note of joy linking up with the beginning of the gospel and the announcement of his birth. Jesus' entire life brings human beings great joy.

Can we hear Jesus' promise of the Spirit in our own lives? Will it empower us to lead lives which shine out to others? Are we filled with of joy like the first disciples? Spend some time listening to the risen Lord today and hear what his promises are for you.
